3 foods to avoid: Foods a nutritionist never eats
Want to know which foods I never eat? As a nutritionist, there are a number of foods I avoid – and you might want to as well!
1. Raw chicken
Getting Salmonella is not on my bucket list. Nor am I a fan of nausea, vomiting and getting admitted to hospital. So this is definitely a food I avoid.
They may be high in protein, but that wouldn’t matter to me.
Some people crave dirt and soil. It’s a condition known as Pica. I avoid eating soil and dirt by rinsing my fruit and vegetables – and trying my best not to face plant into the ground. So far, so good.
I think you get the point!
There are no foods I completely avoid.
Truth be told, I HATE (I know, it’s a strong word but it seems fitting here!) lists that tell you which foods to avoid. They aren’t worth the space they take up on the internet.
I eat my vegetables – and get to have my cake too. And it doesn’t have to be gluten-free, sugar-free, everything-free type. It can just be the normal, full-fat variety… but because I save cake eating for the weekend, it’s not an issue.
You do not need to cut ANY foods out of your diet unless they make you feel unwell – or you don’t like the taste.
Restricting whole food groups makes eating a lot harder (expensive, isolating) and increases your risk of deficiency. And it’s a sure fire way to get uncontrollable cravings that lead to binge and emotional eating. I would know!
YOU have to find out what works for YOU, not your friend Steph, or your mum, or hairdresser who just lost 10kg from doing a crazy juice cleanse.
Your body is unique. What works for me, may not work for you.
If you want to be healthy, find what works for you. Your body is smart, it’ll tell you. You’ll feel energised and happy when you’re eating the best foods for you. And you’ll feel bloated, nauseous, tired, irritable, moody or BLAH if it’s not right.
Learn to trust it knows what it’s doing. (Hint: It does!)

Fruit is NOT fattening. And it’s not too high in sugar. I eat 2 serves a day.
There are NO bad vegetables. I eat 5-10 serves a day. How about you?
Eating fat doesn’t make you fat.
Nor does eating carbs… Simply looks for wholegrain and unprocessed options.
Gluten isn’t bad for you (unless you’re intolerant)
Your life doesn’t have to revolve around the number of the scales or counting macros.
